Many of these areas, and indeed districts within the areas, have developed their own breeds of mountain sheep; some of these breeds such as the Herdwick and the Derbyshire Gritstone are very localized, whereas others such as the Scottish Blackface and the Cheviot are widespread. In some of the more important breeds distinctive strains have been developed ; thus the North Country Cheviot, found mainly in the north of Scotland, is a larger animal than the Cheviot and is recognized as a separate breed ; again there are two distinct types of Scottish Blackface—the Lanark type and the finer boned, lighter fleeced, Newton Stewart type.

T h e rotation adopted will depend on the degree of reliance on home-produced feeds. T h u s where maximum use is to be made of forage crops a cow will require about 0-4 hectare for summer grazing, 0-4 hectare for silage and hay, 0-2 hectare of corn and 0-1 hectare of kale, making a total of just over 1 hectare per cow; this amount would be considerably reduced by higher than average fertilizer applications. In this case the rotation would be simply a three- or four-year ley followed by a corn crop which would be undersown with grass seeds to re-establish the ley, the small area of kale forming part of the corn break.

On large farms the distance from the steading to the more distant fields may make them unsuitable for grazing ; this can unduly complicate grassland management, where the climate is unsuitable for open air dairying and bail milking. Again, if the ley is to be established under a cereal crop (undersown), complications may be experienced when the cereal is harvested. If the ley is established by direct seeding low productivity in the first year may result. ROTATIONS ON MIXED DAIRY AND ARABLE FARMS On some mixed dairy and arable farms two rotations are adopted : one for the fields nearest the building where the ley is the pivot of the rotation, and a 52 The Farming Systems of Great Britain second for the fields farther from the building where the emphasis is on cereal growing.
